Riveira is the capital of the
region of Barbanza and one of the leading cities of the Rias - bay
like body of water- Baixas and of Galicia. Economically, Riveira is
very dependent on the sea, and it constitutes one of the most
important shallow-water fishing ports in Spain. But the town also
has splendid expectations facing the increase of tourism, since for
the visitors natural resources and the people´s appeal are
exceptional. The population reaches 27,000 inhabitants, nearly
14,000 residing in Santa Eugenia Riveira, main urban nucleus and
parish. The town has been twined for years to the Tenerife borough
of Adeje and the American locality of Newark, in the state of New
Jersey, due to the important amount of people from the community of
riveira settled in those places. |
